Earlier this week, President Donald Trump called the head of FIFA after Folarin Balogun, the star player for the U.S., received a red card in the U.S. men’s national team’s victory over Bosnia. By FIFA rules, this meant that Balogun would be suspended for the next game in the tournament, on Monday against Belgium.
However, FIFA’s disciplinary committee made a rare decision to overturn the suspension, making Balogun eligible for the match. But even with Balogun on the pitch, the U.S. lost 4-1 to the Belgians in the quarterfinals, ending their run in the tournament.
After their win, the Belgian team celebrated by mocking Trump’s trademark dance:

There are a few layers of irony to the whole story. Christian Pulisic, the star player for the U.S. national team who left the Belgium match with an injury, has been known to do the Trump Dance, unironically, after scoring goals. Balogun, the player who Trump supposedly intervened to get back on the pitch, is an example of the very birthright citizenship that Trump seeks to eliminate- he was born in New York to a British mother who was told it was unsafe to fly.
Trump was accused of ruining the good vibes of the U.S. team’s run, which had up to that moment been a moment of national unity. And throughout the saga, it was clear that Trump — who was awarded the “FIFA Peace Prize” by the sport’s governing body — has only passing familiarity with the game.
Some fans were amused by the Belgian team’s celebration:

ok it would be pretty funny if they won the whole thing and Trump had to present them with the World Cup trophy https://t.co/4v3HGmNHMq

If this out of touch idiot in the Oval Office didn’t try to make everything about himself, this whole situation would’ve been easier to accept https://t.co/XNrPbfLeD2

The red card fiasco was a nightmare all around. From the actual card being given to Balogun for the foul to the overturned and post-match. https://t.co/bfC5YQW4Dm
