Lara Trump can be slippery when asked direct questions. She tried this tactic Tuesday morning on CNN, when she tried to avoid answering a direct question about what former president Donald Trump meant when he wrote Sunday that “20 percent of the Mail-in Ballots in Pennsylvania are fraudulent. ” Trump tried to back this up by citing an undated interview with an unnamed expert.
She was responding to a rant Donald Trump posted. He demanded the RNC and others investigate a claim of widespread absentee ballot fraud.
The former president’s screeching was apparently based on a Tucker Carlson interview.
” Here we go again! Where is the U.S. Attorney General and FBI to INVESTIGATE? Where is the Pennsylvania Republican Party? We will WIN Pennsylvania by a lot, unless the Dems are allowed to CHEAT. THE RNC MUST ACTIVATE, NOW!!!”

And so the Casie Hunt-Lara Trump exchange began with Hunt asking her why he was backing off on his claims that absentee ballots are rigged and was now encouraging them.
“Donald Trump,” Lara began, “wants every voter no matter if you’re voting Republican, Democrat, or third-party candidate to feel comfortable that you can vote.”
Well, the CNN anchor wasn’t having it. She didn’t let Trump slide away so easily, according to Mediaite.
“So why is he saying that 20 percent of them are fraudulent?” Hunt wanted to know.
“He’s specifically referencing information from the 2020 election,” Lara responded. “What we’re talking about right now is making sure that every vote matters and every vote counts. And I’ve worked very hard at the RNC.”
So while Trump patted herself on the back when no one asked her to, Hunt hung on with bull terrier tenacity.
“What information do we have? What evidence is there that 20% of the mail-in ballots in Pennsylvania in 2020 were fraudulent?” she asked.
This forced the co-chair of the Republican National Committee to admit she wasn’t clear on that answer. So she tried, once again, to give a non-answer.
“I didn’t see that report, so I’d have to go back and look at it. So I can’t directly speak to that. But what I can tell you is, we’ve worked very hard on the ground at the RNC to make sure every voter in this country feels like, when you cast a ballot, whether it’s via mail, whether it’s early voting in-person, or whether it’s on Election Day in an election office around the country, your vote matters and your vote counts,” Trump said.
“And Donald Trump very much wants every Republican voter to vote however they feel most comfortable, and every voter in this country to vote however they feel most comfortable. So I would have to go back and look at that. I have not studied that.”
So at least she admitted that last part, and Hunt scored a small victory for hanging tough.
Hunt thanked her for “being here on a very historic day in this campaign” and just like that, the interview was over. Like her famous father-in-law, who’s not the brightest bulb in the socket, it’s difficult to know if she understood the significance of this conversation.
While she didn’t say if Donald Trump lied about this, she did inadvertently make it clear he pulled this so-called “fact” out of the air.
Score one for the journalists.
