As I’m sure you know, ex-President Donald Trump held a fundraising event at his MAr-a-Lago club/home recently. The event served as the center of reporting for a few days, given that Trump behaved like he always has, treated the event like a makeshift MAGA rally, hailed himself for the coronavirus vaccine, and even called Senate Minority Leader and Kentucky Republican Senator Mitch McConnell a “son of a b*tch.”
But believe it or not, that event got worse. Way… Way worse.
The Washington Post obtained an audio recording from the GOP donor event, featuring the former president’s speech, during which Trump had the audacity to comment on the appearance of former First Lady Michelle Obama, igniting a round of “uproarious” laughter from GOP donors in the crowd.
During his speech, Trump gave himself a rowdy pat on the back for helping Georgia governor Brian Kemp win his 2018 election, in spite of Stacey Abrams getting help from heavy hitters such as Oprah Winfrey and the Obamas.

In the course of mentioning the Obamas in relation to Abrams, Trump referred to the former First Family as “Barack Hussein Obama and the very beautiful Michelle Obama.” The Post writes that this comment made the crowd of GOP donors “laugh uproariously.” While it’s true that Trump didn’t say anything outwardly untoward, the fact of the matter is, we know how petty and ridiculous Donald Trump is and, as the publication notes, “Michelle Obama’s appearance has often served as a punchline in some portions of the conservative Internet.”
So, no, we can’t prove that Donald Trump didn’t mean what he said as a compliment to his wife’s predecessor. However, it’s a bet I’d be more than willing to make, given all that we know about Donald Trump, and especially considering that the crowd reacted just exactly as I’m sure he hoped they would.
