Donald Trump Shut Down By Interviewer Over His ‘Obsession’

There’s a subject that reliably works its way into almost every Trump interview eventually, and it derailed part of this week’s conversation with Jake Sherman.

Trump was sitting for a wide-ranging interview with Punchbowl News’ Sherman, one that was supposed to cover the SAVE America Act, the war in Iran and Todd Blanche’s stalled nomination. Somewhere in the middle of a tangent about China and energy, Trump started in on wind power being a “disaster,” and Sherman stopped him before he could get very far.

“I don’t know what your obsession is with that,” Sherman said.

Trump didn’t let that pass. “You know what my obsession is?” he replied. “I want the country to be successful.” Sherman tried to steer things forward while Trump kept talking anyway, noting: “Some Republicans are against you on that too.” Trump had an answer ready for that too. “That’s because they don’t understand business.”

Anyone who’s followed Trump’s energy commentary knows this particular grievance on sight. He called wind power “the scam of the century” in January.

Speaking to oil executives that same month, he told them: “My goal is to not let any windmill be built. They’re losers.” He’s insisted repeatedly, and incorrectly, that China manufactures turbines purely to export to what he’s called “suckers like Europe” while quietly using none itself.

The actual numbers say otherwise. China held 65% of global wind turbine manufacturing capacity in 2023, and its wind farms generated roughly 40% of the world’s total wind power output in 2024, according to Department of Energy figures.

The interview drew a range of reactions online.

Windmills weren’t the only rocky patch.

Sherman also pushed Trump on why Republicans are bracing for a rough midterm cycle, and Trump insisted the anxiety wasn’t really about him. “They’re angry at Republicans,” he said, “but they’re not angry at me.” He argued there wasn’t much he could personally do to help, since he isn’t running this cycle. That framing sits oddly next to his own approval rating, which has been hovering around 35%.
