Trump has been up to a lot of nonsense in the public eye here lately and, while it’s certainly not unusual for the former president to act completely insane at any given moment, one former federal prosecutor believes there’s actually a method to Donald Trump’s madness this time, as a damning new piece of video evidence was released in his ongoing New York fraud case this week, and they believed the scandal-plagued ex-president is doing all he can to distract you from it.

New York Attorney General Letitia James’ office publicly released the footage from ex-President Trump’s damning video deposition in the ongoing civil fraud trial this week. AG James is currently in the midst of a civil fraud trial against the former president and New York real estate “mogul” and his two eldest sons for allegedly knowingly over and underinflating the value of various assets owned by the Trump Organization, in an effort to receive more favorable treatment from banks, insurance companies, and the IRS.

As a result of this alleged fraud, AG James is seeking not only hundreds of millions of dollars in fines against the ex-president and his sons but also seeking the dissolution of his Trump Organization family company and asking the judge to bar the former president from ever conducting business in the state of New York again.

Yesterday, former federal prosecutor Renato Mariotti appeared on MSNBC to discuss this development and explained that he believes Trump is desperately trying to “distract” the public from the dirt that’s coming out against him.

Network host and attorney Katie Phang opened the segment: “Let’s talk about the impact with the release of this videotape, considering the fact that the A.G.’s office already had the substantive testimony itself.”

“Yeah, look, it is very powerful to see him actually mouthing the words himself,” Mariotti responded. “That’s why they tape those video depositions. I do the same thing when I depose people in my cases.”

“Look, that’s why I think Trump was trying to distract us so much this week,” the former federal prosecutor went on to add. “We had this powerful closing argument being offered by the A.G.’s office. Donald Trump was trying to get everyone to focus on his statements or attacking the judge, all the sideshow. But the reality is, the testimony is very powerful. What we just saw a moment ago, he’s essentially saying, I prepared these statements, financial statements, for myself. Not just to admit them, to try to obtain loans, which is the obvious purpose of them.”

Ultimately, Mariotti explained that all of this is “not credible testimony. And I think that’s why the judge is writing an opinion that’s going to be very disastrous for his companies.”
