Controversial Texas Republican Senator Ted Cruz effectively got his ass handed to him by a retired NYPD detective who appeared on MSNBC’s “The Katie Phang Show,” where he ripped the GOP lawmaker for refusing the mere notion of new, more effective gun laws in the US and instead insisting that nonsense like stronger doors and armed teachers in somehow the answer to the problem.

Cruz has seemingly made it his mission over the last few days to ensure that everyone in this country knows damn good and well that his priorities lie with guns over children, after 19 innocent kids and 2 beloved teachers lost their lives to a mass-murdering gunman with an AR-15 assault rifle on Tuesday.

Instead of offering an ounce of focus or platform on the literal assault rifle that was obtained by an 18-year-old high school dropout just days after his birthday, Cruz has instead trained his focus on the unlocked exterior door at Robb Elementary School — a talking point he heavily peddled during his speech at the National Rifle Association convention last night.

Host Phang played a clip of Cruz making his case from the stage before turning to former law enforcement detective Marq Claxton and asking for his expert thoughts on Cruz’s propositions.

Claxton wasted no time in calling the GOP senator “boldly ignorant,” before proceeding to tear him a new one.

“Marq, I was a prosecutor for half my career, I never prosecuted somebody for leaving a door open. How absurd is this proposal by Ted Cruz that the solution is to make sure that we don’t have too many doors at our schools?” the host questioned.

“Ted Cruz’s statements were boldly ignorant and dismissive of the clear obvious danger that is faced by so many people in society because of the prevalence of violence and gun violence in particular,” he responded. “It really shows just how so many political electeds lack the fortitude to move forward and do the right thing: save lives.”

“Instead of sloganeering, Mr.Cruz and his other elected colleagues really should be working on legislation that provides, or minimizes the risk of damage, and could quite possibly and probably save lives,” the former detective added. “That is some additional gun restrictions, some background checks, there are other things that are out there that will undoubtedly be effective and save lives, and prevent these gun violence deaths.”
