During a recent appearance on CNN’s Anderson Cooper 360, former Republican House Rep. Adam Kinzinger finally said out loud what we’ve all been thinking for years — disgraced ex-President Donald J. Trump is losing his mind, and he doesn’t mean that “metaphorically.”
Kinzinger, who has personally experienced the dark side of Donald Trump’s wrath due to his deep involvement in the January 6th House Select Committee that cost him his congressional seat in the most recent midterm elections, delivered his assessment on the former president’s mental state in response to a question from Cooper regarding Donald Trump’s recent and incessant influx of violent and threatening social media posts that have grown so severe, prosecutors with Special Counsel Jack Smith’s office were left with no choice but to seek a protective order, as they feared what Trump and his violent rhetoric would do to key witnesses in their case against the ex-president. The CNN host asked Kinzinger for his thoughts on the Trump legal team’s defense that Donald’s violent public rhetoric was categorized as “political speech,” and therefore protected by the First Amendment.
“Trump’s lawyers claim the former president’s post saying, ‘if you go after me, I’m coming after you’ is just political speech, has nothing to do with the case. I mean, do you buy that?” Cooper asked the former Illinois congressman.
“No, I mean, it’s garbage, obviously,” Adam responded, going on to add that Trump is “really good” at “saying something, but in a way that you could somehow conceivably, at least with a straight face, argue that you mean something else.”

“You see that through his whole life, through his whole career. Of course, he was sitting around angry, tweeted that out, he’s mad, he’s done other things to threaten, ‘You know, boy, it’s not me, but this could turn really violent if you do this, and this is going to destroy our country,’ and not to mention all the other fake tweets he’s put out where he’s talked about like, America is going to hell, Nancy Pelosi is going to hell..”
But the former House Rep. took things a step further still when he went on to paint a picture of an unhinged madman, teetering on the brink of full-blown insanity:
You see a man that is literally, I think, literally losing his mind. I don’t even mean that metaphorically. I think he’s actually going insane.
And so no, I don’t think it’s just protected political speech when you make a threat because look, there are people out there that are gonna take that seriously, and they’re gonna take action. I have a number of them, you know, reaching out to me in my office saying that Donald Trump said something bad at me and they’re taking that literally and they’re gonna come after me and my 18-month-old kid.”
