Georgia’s Political Landscape Looks Very Different As Before-And-After Photos Show A Remarkable Shift

A stunning change of power

Georgia Republicans have had a pretty comfortable run running the state. For years, the people occupying its top offices looked much the same, and nobody needed a second look to know which party was in charge.

Then November 3 happened. Suddenly, Georgia’s political portrait looks very different, and a set of before-and-after pictures has given social media a rather striking look at just how much has changed.

The comparison was shared by pollster Patrick Murray, who posted the two images on X with the caption: “The before and after pics of Georgia’s 8 constitutional officers is remarkable.”

The outgoing lineup featured Republican Gov. Brian Kemp, Lt. Gov. Burt Jones, Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger and Attorney General Chris Carr, alongside four other Republican officials.

The incoming group is a very different picture. It features Democrat Keisha Lance Bottoms, who won the governor’s race, alongside Josh McLaurin as lieutenant governor, Penny Brown Reynolds as secretary of state and Tanya Miller as attorney general.

The remaining positions will go to Lydia Powell as state school superintendent, Katherine Juhan-Arnold as agriculture commissioner, Keisha Waites as insurance commissioner and Nikki Porcher as labor commissioner. Seven of the eight incoming officials are Black women, with McLaurin the lone man in the group.

That is quite a change from the outgoing lineup, which was dominated by men. And it is not just a change in appearances. Democrats won all eight statewide offices shown in the comparison, taking positions that had been held by Republicans going into Election Day.

The governor’s race was particularly significant.

Bottoms defeated Republican businessman Rick Jackson, becoming Georgia’s first woman governor and the first Black woman elected governor of a U.S. state. Democrats also took the offices of lieutenant governor, attorney general and secretary of state, while defeating four Republican incumbents in other statewide races.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that the victories ended a generation of Republican control over Georgia’s top elected state offices. The Georgia Recorder also described the results as a clean sweep, with Democrats winning every statewide office on the ballot.

Unsurprisingly, the pictures attracted plenty of reactions.
