In reaction to the disastrous NATO summit with Donald Trump, where the President of the United States repeatedly attacked America’s European allies, Germany’s Foreign Minister has just announced that the country is putting even more distance between it and the United States.
After Trump referred to the European Union as a “foe” when it comes to trade, German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas released this concerning statement:
We can no longer completely rely on the White House. To maintain our partnership with the USA we must readjust it. The first clear consequence can only be that we need to align ourselves even more closely in Europe.”
Other countries in Europe have also expressed the same attitudes, stating that America is now a hostile government on international trade policies under Trump’s leadership. Maas also said:
Europe must not let itself be divided however sharp the verbal attacks and absurd the tweets may be.”

These comments were made in reaction to an interview with Trump that was aired yesterday on CBS’ Face The Nation. Trump had said:
I think we have a lot of foes. I think the European Union is a foe, what they do to us in trade. Now you wouldn’t think of the European Union, but they’re a foe.”
Maas’ statement comes right as Trump and Russian president Vladimir Putin were having closed door meetings in Helsinki, despite the national outcry asking the president to call the meeting off after 12 Russians have been indicted in connection to the 2016 election meddling.
