Ivanka Trump Shares A Post From Marine One — And The Internet Told Her To ‘Read The Room’

Sunday’s World Cup final between Spain and Argentina at MetLife Stadium marked the first time a sitting U.S. president had attended a men’s World Cup final. Trump arrived aboard Marine One, and Ivanka shared footage of him looking out the window toward the stadium below, captioning it simply: “Incoming ! #fifaworldcup @FIFAcom.”

The comments weren’t as welcoming. One reply simply said, “Read the room.”

Many others echoed the same sentiment.


Ivanka’s connection to FIFA didn’t begin with Sunday’s final. She appeared onstage with her son Theodore during the Club World Cup draw ceremony in Miami last year.

This year, she also attached her name to a FIFA-affiliated education charity project funded in part through World Cup ticket sales, an initiative expected to benefit from a share of the more than seven million tickets sold across the tournament’s 104 matches in 16 host cities across the United States, Canada and Mexico.

That relationship has grown alongside her father’s increasingly close ties with FIFA President Gianni Infantino.

Infantino has become a regular presence around Trump this year, joining him on overseas trips and making repeated visits to the White House. One trip even delayed Infantino’s arrival at a soccer officials’ congress in Paraguay because he was traveling with Trump through the Middle East first. A replica of the World Cup trophy now sits inside the Oval Office, while Trump himself presented the real trophy to Sunday’s champions.

By the time the final arrived, Trump’s appearance was simply the latest stop on an unusually busy sports calendar

This year alone, he has attended the Super Bowl in New Orleans, the Daytona 500, UFC events in Miami and Newark, NCAA wrestling championships in Philadelphia, and now the biggest match in international soccer.

Long before kickoff, Trump had suggested that tensions involving Canada and Mexico, along with his own remarks that Canada should become “the 51st state,” would only make the tournament “more compelling,” treating political friction as part of the spectacle rather than something to avoid.

The guest list reflected that same larger-than-life atmosphere.

First Lady Melania Trump sat alongside Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Spain’s King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia, and Infantino. Nearby, celebrities including Kylie Jenner, Timothée Chalamet, Gayle King and Matt Damon filled out one of the tournament’s highest-profile crowds.
