Donald Trump’s newly nominated 2024 running mate pick J.D. Vance had a rather bizarre and unsettling answer for a reporter who asked him, “What makes you smile? What makes you happy?” during a recent presser event.
In a clip of the incident that’s now going viral across social media, we see the controversial, far-Right Ohio Senator turned Republican 2024 vice presidential nominee addressing and taking questions from the press from a stage.
At one point, a reporter opens their question to Vance: “A little bit different here. You’re often criticized as being too serious, too angry, sometimes. What makes you smile? What makes you happy?”
Vance gave his signature, awkward smile before responding with this bizarre answer: “Well, I smile at a lot of things, including bogus questions from the media, man.”
J.D. gave a forced laugh before adding, “Look, I think if you watch a full speech that I give, I actually am having a good time out here and I’m enjoying this.”

As most Americans are aware by now, the Trump 2024 VP pick has been at the center of endless criticisms and controversy over a lot of his resurfaced, past comments — most infamously including his “childless cat ladies” remarks about Democratic leadership in the US and his claims that childless Americans are “deranged” and “psychotic.”
Bearing that in mind, social media users were quick to note that, for such a self-proclaimed “family man,” it’s certainly a bit bizarre that Vance’s wife and children weren’t mentioned once when it came to what “makes him happy” — but, rather, he pulled a page straight from the Trump Playbook and went directly into launching an attack against the media.
Normal people would say “my children”, but not this pro family man. 🥴 https://t.co/FIFR1DaDpl

How difficult is it to say wife kids time with them?!?!? So strange.

He could have and should have said his children. But no…him and Trump hate their kids

This is a question that you’d be asked at an initial interview for an entry level job. JD is so insecure, instead of making himself appear human by answering “my family, biking, hiking, any random hobby” like a normal human, he’s acts defensive and looks smarmy and yes, weird.

My wife. My kids. Helping people.
There are any number of ways he could have answered that question but he goes the fake news route. #Weird— Anne Holliday (@AnneSBU) August 7, 2024
My kids
My wife
My faith
The great outdoors
Serving my country
Making a difference
Reading a good book
Memories of mamaw
A long drive
A diet mountain dew
.
But no, he went with *trying to humiliate reporter who gives me a softball question that makes me uncomfortable*— Cindy S (@IveGotDys) August 7, 2024
How hard would it have been to say “my kids?”
— rmschloss (@rmschloss) August 7, 2024
No matter what Vance does, he never can quite land with the people.
