Donald Trump exacerbated the civil unrest the United States is enduring following George Floyd’s brutal murder by Minneapolis police officers. More than one hundred and eight thousand Americans are dead from the COVID-19 pandemic that the president failed to act promptly on when he first learned of the looming threat. Upwards of forty million Americans have found themselves suddenly out of work. But, somehow, the Trump administration wants to make the president appear as some sort of heroic figure even though there is death and carnage all around us.
Donald Trump and his wife-bot visited the Saint John Paul II National Shrine in Northeast Washington, DC, on Tuesday and that, of course, was following the president’s photo-op with a Bible in his hand on Monday while standing in front of a church just after tear-gassing and flash-banging protesters. Trump is really trying to show off his Christian evangelical bonafide.
White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany somehow compared Trump’s visit to St. John’s on Monday to Churchill visiting war bunkers and George W. Bush throwing out the first pitch during the World Series after 9/11. McEnany suggested that Trump’s Bible photo-op that was slammed by religious leaders was a historical moment.
“This was a very important moment,” she insisted “I would note that through all of time, we’ve seen presidents and leaders across the world who have had leadership moments and very powerful symbols that were important for a nation to see at any given time, to show a message of resilience and determination.”

“Like Churchill,” McEnany said, “we saw him inspecting the bombing damage. It sent a powerful message of leadership to the British people. And George W. Bush throwing out the ceremonial first pitch after 9/11 and Jimmy Carter putting on a sweater to encourage energy savings and George H.W. Bush signing the Americans with Disabilities Act flanked by two disabled Americans.”

Beyond parody. I do not remember former President Jimmy Carter, Bush, or Churchill threatening American citizens with the U.S. military, or tear-gassing protesters so they would look good after emerging from a bunker. I must have missed that part.
