A past video of Colorado Congresswoman Lauren Boebert has resurfaced, once again bringing the controversial lawmaker into the spotlight. The clip, recorded in 2018, shows Boebert dismissing America’s gun violence crisis in a way that has reignited outrage, especially in light of recent tragedies. In the video, Boebert minimizes the nation’s annual gun-related deaths, calling them “a drop in the bucket” compared to other causes, including abortion. This resurfacing comes at a particularly sensitive time, following a shooting tragedy in Georgia that has once again forced the country to confront its ongoing gun violence crisis.
The video, shared widely on social media, was recorded as Boebert drove to Carbondale, Colorado, to protest students who were participating in the “March for Our Lives” movement—an organized protest against school shootings following the horrific mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. In the recording, Boebert expressed her displeasure with the protest, claiming that the students were misled in their calls for gun reform and suggesting they were advocating for the removal of Second Amendment rights.
A Drop in the Bucket?
In the most controversial part of her rant, Boebert downplayed the significance of gun-related deaths in America. She casually compared the roughly 15,000 gun deaths per year in the U.S. to the nearly one million abortions performed annually, implying that the former was insignificant in comparison.
“So I am on my way to Carbondale, Colorado. There’s supposedly an organized march, the ‘March For Our Lives’ that’s going to take place. And I’m really interested to see if people know what they’re marching for. I guess this is supposed to be the beginning of people speaking out to take away our Second Amendment rights, and I’m not happy about it,” Boebert said in the video.

This flippant comment, referring to gun violence as “a drop in the bucket,” has resurfaced in the wake of renewed debates around gun control, particularly as the country mourns yet another mass shooting incident. In the video, Boebert further questioned the logic of protesters advocating for tighter gun laws, framing the protests as a misguided attack on personal freedoms.
“I have a right I don’t want. Take it away from me. Get rid of this. I want the people around me to not be able to protect themselves, to not be able to defend me,” Boebert continued, echoing common pro-gun rhetoric. This is the kind of stuff that Republicans refuse to try to lift even one tiny finger to protect Americans from:
Boebert’s Polling Troubles
As this video circulates widely across social media, it adds to an already troubling political environment for Lauren Boebert. In her previous district, Boebert’s extreme stances on guns, abortion, and her behavior in office had already cost her significant political ground. After struggling to maintain support among moderate voters, Boebert is now facing a tough re-election campaign in a newly drawn district.
A recent poll shows Boebert’s favorability ratings have sharply declined, with more than half of the district’s voters expressing disapproval of her performance in Congress. According to a separate poll, Boebert trails her Democratic opponent by a narrow margin. The new district, slightly more conservative than her former one, might seem like an advantage. However, her declining favorability and highly publicized missteps have left her vulnerable.
Boebert’s first debate in this race (in 2024’s General election) did little to improve her image. In fact, her opponent has openly claimed that she “melted down” during the debate, with her responses lacking coherence and substance. Political analysts suggest that her confrontational approach and outlandish comments have alienated moderate conservatives, leaving her base significantly weakened.
Public Scandals Compound the Problem
Boebert’s public image has been further damaged by a series of recent scandals. Perhaps the most embarrassing was an incident at a Denver theater, where security footage caught Boebert behaving inappropriately during a performance of Beetlejuice. The video showed Boebert letting a man grope her breasts in public while she reciprocated by touching his private parts. This wasn’t just any casual encounter—reports later revealed that the man was her date, adding another layer of controversy to an already damaging situation.
This public scandal has further undermined Boebert’s standing with voters who expect their elected officials to demonstrate a certain level of decorum. While Boebert initially attempted to downplay the incident, the damage was already done. Combined with her radical rhetoric, the scandal has alienated key conservative supporters in her new district, many of whom feel that her behavior has become a distraction from the important issues at hand.
By the way – here’s a mugshot with Lauren’s brush with the law.
A New District, but Old Problems
As Boebert faces re-election, she must grapple with more than just policy disagreements with her constituents. Her inability to balance personal conduct and political strategy has left her on shaky ground. The redrawn district was seen as an opportunity for Boebert to regain her footing, but the combination of her public missteps and divisive comments, such as those in the resurfaced 2018 video, continue to paint her as a polarizing figure.
Despite Boebert’s attempts to frame herself as a staunch defender of gun rights, it seems her most significant challenge may be overcoming her own self-inflicted controversies. With polling showing an uphill battle, a hostile media environment, and a Democratic opponent eager to capitalize on her every mistake, Boebert’s future in Congress looks increasingly uncertain.
In a political era where public opinion can shift dramatically based on social media outrage and scandalous behavior, Boebert’s approach to both policy and personal conduct may prove to be her undoing. Her flippant remarks about gun violence, calling it “a drop in the bucket,” coupled with public scandals, have left her scrambling to regain the trust of her voters.
As Election Day approaches, it’s clear that Boebert’s toughest opponent might not be her Democratic challenger but her own record of controversy.
