Two weeks after the China trip, the question of why Melania stayed home while Lara flew to Beijing on Air Force One is the one detail from the summit that nobody has been able to move past.
Melania’s office confirmed her absence to the South China Morning Post without offering any reason for it. Her spokesperson said she was not travelling and left it there.
What filled the gap was the passenger list: Eric Trump, Lara Trump, sixteen corporate CEOs and most of the senior cabinet. The first lady’s seat, in the public imagination at least, went to her daughter-in-law, who documented every moment of the trip on social media with considerable enthusiasm.
Lara’s China content was widely discussed. The departure selfie captioned “Team CHYYYYYNA,” the state banquet photos, the handshake with Xi Jinping, all posted with the energy of someone who understood the assignment and enjoyed it.

Melania, by contrast, has spent the second term cultivating a carefully controlled public presence, appearing on her own terms and saying nothing about anything she did not choose to address.
Astrology expert Tracy Higgs offered The Mirror her read on why. “Melania has always carried an energy of wanting selective involvement rather than constant visibility, so part of her may genuinely not be overly bothered by the travel itself; it is more the symbolism of it that could matter,” Higgs said.
She added: “I do not necessarily feel she would be outwardly resentful, but I do feel there could be an internal sense of ‘that should have been my place.'”
Higgs went on to describe the astrological dynamic between the two women. “Melania Trump, a Taurus, and Lara Trump, a Libra, are two very different personalities when you look at them astrologically. Taurus energy likes stability, privacy, loyalty, and keeping control of the environment around them, whilst Libra is naturally more social, diplomatic, and comfortable stepping into public roles. On the surface, they can appear harmonious because both signs dislike unnecessary confrontation, but underneath, there can be tension around position, image, and influence.”
None of this is confirmed by either woman. Melania has not publicly addressed Lara, and Lara has stayed quiet as well. So the conversation continues to live in the gap between public appearances, unnamed sources, and the internet doing what it always does with the Trump family.
