First Lady Melania Trump announced the cancellation of the annual White House Easter Egg Roll on Monday, and drew ridicule and mockery for claiming that is was a “difficult decision” amid a pandemic.

The Centers for Disease Control currently recommends that public gatherings be no larger than 50 people as the coronavirus continues to spread across the country, infecting nearly 4,000 Americans and killing at least 70 so far.

But despite her husband referring to the virus as a “hoax,” Melania Trump put out a statement canceling the Easter Egg Roll, a tradition that has only been canceled two other times in the last 140 years.

“I deeply regret this cancellation, but we need to make difficult decisions in the short-term to ensure a healthy country for the long-term,” she said in a statement.

Of course, canceling the event is actually an easy decision, not a difficult one.

Thousands of Americans attend the annual event, which would put many at risk of spreading or contracting the virus, including children.

Social media took aim at Melania over her statement.

Melania did do the right thing by canceling the event, but the way she did it as if proceeding with it was an option during this pandemic is certainly worthy of mockery.
