Republican House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy is currently wading through a world of scandal right about now, in case you missed it, after he was brutally busted in a flat-out, bald-faced lie to the New York Times, after he blatantly denied saying he would ask Donald Trump to resign after the January 6th Capitol riot — only for MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow to play a leaked clip of him literally saying it during her segment.

Maddow managed to obtain the damning audio clip from Times reporters Alexander Burns and Jonathan Martin, allowing her viewers to listen to audio of a call between McCarthy and Rep. Liz Cheney of McCarthy saying exactly what he says he didn’t say, ultimately proving that he lied through his teeth when he denied the original reporting.

And now, Maddow says she expects this scandal to hit McCarthy’s political career in a bad kind of way, as politicians and officials will likely soon be calling for his resignation.

“I don’t mean to be pollyanna about this at all, or naïve,” Maddow said of the scandal that she blew the lid off of. “But it seems to me that I expect a sort of level — from politicians, in particular — of saying one thing in public and saying it another way in private. Certainly speaking more harshly, less diplomatic terms in private.”

“What I don’t expect is — for even public officials, even politicians — to flat out lie about what they have said, when it is on the record, when they have reason to believe it might have even been recorded, and they just lie and deny it happened,” she went on to explain.

“I think this creates a real problem for Mr. McCarthy, I think he must at least apologize, I would not be surprised if there are calls for his resignation, for him lying and denying that he did this when in fact he did it,” Maddow stated.

The way things are shaking out, it certainly seems that she’s right.
