Trump must not know we're going through a national crisis.

Donald Trump launched a series of tweets on Monday, first to let us know that he’s the real victim on Memorial Day. Then, he issued threats to North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper to demand that the Republican National Convention which is to be held in Charlotte be filled to “full capacity” amid the novel coronavirus pandemic. And it was a weird threat since the RNC event isn’t supposed to take place until August.

“Unfortunately, Democrat Governor, @RoyCooperNC is still in Shutdown mood & unable to guarantee that by August we will be allowed full attendance in the Arena,” Trump tweeted. “In other words, we would be spending millions of dollars building the Arena to a very high standard without even knowing if the Democrat Governor would allow the Republican Party to fully occupy the space.”

Trump went on to say the “thousands of enthusiastic Republicans” that will be going to NC in August “must be immediately given an answer by the Governor as to whether or not the space will be allowed to be fully occupied.”

Trump wanted an immediate response, so he got one from Governor Cooper stating that state health officials are already working with the RNC, but added that “North Carolina is relying on data and science to protect our state’s public health and safety.”

Trump’s four tweets targeting the state completely blindsided party officials and those involved in planning the convention, according to CNN.

Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel said the RNC, Trump campaign, and host committee are moving “full steam ahead” in planning the convention, but said they will assess in late June or early July as to whether contingencies need to be made due to the coronavirus.

“We do not think at this time we have to switch to an alternative plan, but of course, we will monitor circumstances and adjust accordingly,” she said. McDaniel added, “We will not be holding a virtual convention.”

Trump is probably taking a moment to look up “data” and “science” so he can understand the Governor’s response. It would be really nice if the president would stop creating chaos every day amid the national crisis. Charlotte, by the way, was the only city that submitted a bid to host the convention, so we’re not sure what Donald is thinking.
