Melania is only interested in Melania.

According to All or Nothing, a new book by journalist Michael Wolff, First Lady Melania Trump purportedly laughed off efforts from her husband’s campaign to have her appear at events. Of course, this is typical for Melania, who avoided the public eye throughout most of Donald Trump’s first term as president and maintained this habit throughout his 2024 presidential campaign.

She missed his Super Tuesday primary election victory party and several other key events. She also didn’t attend his courtroom trials, especially his criminal hush money trials in New York. Of course, it’s understandable that she might not show up for that one, considering it was about her husband’s adultery. According to Newsweek reports, her continual avoidance of the public eye has fueled questions about the couple’s relationship, and “Where’s Melania?” was a constant refrain echoed by the media and Trump critics during the campaign.

Melania did find time to appear at the Republican National Convention (RNC) in Milwaukee last July. She spoke out after an assassination attempt on her husband during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. And she made a rare appearance last October during her husband’s Madison Square Garden rally, where she described her supporters as “the heartbeat of this great metropolis.” She also joined her husband onstage for his victory speech in West Palm Beach, Florida.

I’m sure Melania is smart enough to show up when it counts. She knows a good grift when she sees one, although she (and hubby dearest) have made questionable mistakes in some of her Bitcoin ventures.

Wolff has written several books about Trump, which I think makes him an expert on the presidentAll or Nothing, which centers around his 2024 election campaign and Melania’s frequent absences during this time, highlights this.

At one point, Wolff described a moment when Melania allegedly laughed at the campaign’s attempt “to get her to accompany her husband.”

According to the excerpt:

“Since the first indictment in New York, when Melania had simply laughed at the campaign’s effort to get her to accompany her husband (‘Nice try’), it had been clear that she wasn’t going to show up. During the past year, she had yet to make a single campaign appearance. In only one instance in 2023 did she even appear on the plane—and then only hitching a ride. Magically, the Melania issue had not, in the White House years nor the Mar-a-Lago years—with both staffers and press quite aware of the Trumps’ nontraditional living arrangements and their careful distance from each other— become an issue.”

Wolff also noted the press began actively questioning Donald Trump about his wife’s whereabouts.

“Melania continued to be an additional freak-out, absolutely refusing every entreaty to speak or even to appear side by side with her husband. He had never faced point-blank questions from the media about their relationship. But what if ‘Where’s Melania?’ started now in earnest? But that was all before the shooting…now the attempt on Trump’s life not only made him again incontrovertibly the central figure of the moment, if not the age, giving him a maximum hero’s electoral mantle, but it also repositioned his convention as the joyous and abject coronation of which he dreamed,” per the excerpt.

In an online statement following the attempt on her husband’s life, Melania urged Americans to unite outside of politics and expressed condolences to the families of those injured and deceased. She also referred to Trump’s qualities. While the rest of us don’t know what those “qualities” are, she’s paid to hang on his arm and say this stuff.

In the days following her husband’s second inauguration, the First Lady has once again been largely absent, only accompanying Donald Trump to a hurricane disaster site in North Carolina on January 24. That same day, she was photographed with Trump and California Governor Gavin Newsom during a tense interchange while touring wildfire damage.

People don’t change quickly, and this First Lady will unlikely show up for much at the White House. Like her husband, this woman rarely does anything unless it’s to her benefit. It’s a sad contrast to Jill Biden, who was full of warmth and light, making Melania’s stony silence seem chilling.

Coupled with her husband’s insane dismantling of this country, we’re in for four terrible years.

All or Nothing is scheduled for release on February 25.
