Recently, Trump’s right hand has managed to upstage two separate White House appearances, regardless of what he was actually there to announce.
The South Lawn stop came first.
Trump walked press through his latest construction project, a new presidential helipad, and spent more than 20 minutes covering everything from granite driveways to refurbished columns. He also defended his controversial ballroom addition, explaining it would include “bomb shelters” because the project is “so much a military component” of the building. His right hand stayed visible the entire time, discolored and swollen beneath a layer of makeup that didn’t quite blend in.
The hand made a second entrance two days later.
That one took place in the Roosevelt Room, where Trump met with cryptocurrency and financial executives to talk data centers and floated his ongoing effort to arrange another sit-down with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

Somewhere in the middle of that, he was photographed signing a granite slab meant for the helipad project, and that’s the shot journalist Aaron Rupar grabbed and ran with. “Trump’s mangled hand as photographed today at the White House,” Rupar wrote, posting the Reuters image on X.

We’re ruled by people barely alive. There should be an upper limit for that or at least a cognitive test.

Trump’s right hand has been a running subject since bruising there was first documented in 2025.
Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt has chalked it up to sheer volume, telling reporters the irritation comes from how many hands Trump shakes on a given day. Trump has offered his own theory too, tying it to his daily aspirin habit. “They say aspirin is good for thinning out the blood, and I don’t want thick blood pouring through my heart. I want nice, thin blood pouring through my heart. Does that make sense?” he told the Wall Street Journal in January.
A third explanation came last July, when officials confirmed Trump has chronic venous insufficiency, a vein condition common in older adults that makes it harder for blood to return to the heart from the legs. The diagnosis followed medical tests ordered after swelling first appeared in his lower legs.
