Oscar-Winning Actress Embarrasses Trump While Accepting Emmy Award

An actress who Trump has probably heard of bashed him from the Emmy Awards stage.

Donald Trump doesn’t like it when celebrities criticize him, especially when it’s a celebrity from his generation that he knows. And that’s almost certainly the case with actress Sally Field.

According to The Daily Beast, it happened Monday night at the annual Emmy Awards. Field won an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie, for the film Remarkably Bright Creatures, thereby becoming, at 79, the oldest performer ever to win in that category. She’s around Trump’s age, and therefore a celebrity with whom he is probably familiar.

In her speech, Field did not mention the president by name, but she did get political in her remarks, defending Canada at the time of the bitter tariff war, and almost speaking against the Trump-supported merger between Hollywood studios Paramount and Warner Bros.

“And it’s Canada! Blessed Canada, our neighbors, our friends,” Field said. “We’re the arts… We matter. Our voices matter. Our diversity, our unique storytelling matters. We can’t let those voices be silenced or compromised or merged. Thank you for this!”

The Washington Examiner called it a “subtle jab at [the] U.S.-Canada trade war,” while noting that the Emmy ceremony was mostly light on political speeches from the winners or presenters.

As for that Hollywood merger, it remains in limbo, following a lawsuit by a group of Democratic attorneys general who are opposed to further consolidation in the entertainment industry.

Social media users had praise for Field’s speech.
