Katie Zacharia, the new White House Press Secretary replacing the departed Karoline Leavitt, took the podium for her first day, and it didn’t go particularly well.

Zacharia began by reading a highly awkward prepared statement.

“I am so honored to work for President Trump and the American people as the new White House press secretary,” she said in the statement. “I have wanted to work for him for a very long time. I’m looking forward to working with each of you as well, especially as we are in the middle of the midterm blitz, with energy and excitement never seen before in the history of midterms, thanks to President Trump.”

She went on to say that “attendance is at record highs,” presumably at Trump’s campaign rallies. And when asked if the U.S. has stopped sharing intelligence with Ukraine, she answered “I’ll have to get back to you on that.”

Perhaps most embarrassingly, the new press secretary confused her husband with Trump, referring to “My president, I mean my husband.”

Social media responses to her first day in the new role were not very kind.
