According to The Independent, a political science professor is warning that democracy in the U.S. is unstable, and we could end up in a civil war. On Sunday, Barbara F. Walter of the University of California San Diego told CNN anchor Michael Holmes that she believed the U.S. was rapidly approaching a point of no return for political instability with democracy at a tipping point. Walter, who serves on a CIA advisory panel called the Political Instability Task Force, said that the collapse of American democracy and political stability had occurred at a “surprisingly fast rate.” And while this is alarming, it’s not too surprising considering what we all witnessed on Jan. 6 when a mob of Trump supporters attacked the Capitol to stop the peaceful transition of power.
In her forthcoming book, ‘How Civil Wars Start,’ the Washington Post reports that she writes, “We are closer to civil war than any of us would like to believe.”
“No one wants to believe that their beloved democracy is in decline or headed toward war,” she writes. But, “if you were an analyst in a foreign country looking at events in America — the same way you’d look at events in Ukraine or the Ivory Coast or Venezuela — you would go down a checklist, assessing each of the conditions that make civil war likely. And what you would find is that the United States, a democracy founded more than two centuries ago, has entered very dangerous territory.”

Walter’s warning comes on the heels of a stunning report saying that three former Army generals are concerned that a divided U.S. military could result in a civil war following 2024’s presidential election. The generals’ warning argued that the chances of a “coup succeeding” should be taken seriously if the next election result is called into question. Trump has baselessly claimed that the election was rigged after being defeated by Joe Biden in the popular and electoral votes. That dangerous rhetoric, of course, led to the deadly siege of the Capitol. And he’s not going to stop. Trump would love to be back in power so that he can be protected from numerous legal issues. Trump’s supporters are just as bad. They will do anything to put him back in power. And all of this for a girdled septuagenarian who wears lifts in his shoes to appear taller.
