Psychologists Say This One Phrase Is Trump’s Secret Weapon— Here’s Why

A strange Trump sign-off

Donald Trump is not known for quiet language. His posts usually come with insults, all caps and plenty of outrage. For years, that has been his style. Short attacks. Loud words. Messages designed to provoke a reaction.

But recently, a different tone has started appearing in some of his posts.

At the bottom of certain messages, Trump now signs off with a simple line: “Thank you for your attention to this matter.”

It sounds almost like something from a corporate memo. No shouting. No insults. Just a calm, formal sentence that feels very different from the Trump people are used to seeing online.

Psychologists say that difference is exactly why the phrase stands out.

Claire Robertson, an assistant professor of psychology who studies political communication, said Trump’s normal style relies heavily on emotional language. Words like “corrupt,” “hoax,” or “enemy” are meant to trigger strong reactions. Those kinds of words spread quickly online because they create anger, excitement, or fear.

That emotional language helps posts travel quickly within political groups. Supporters share them. Critics react to them. Either way, the message spreads.

The phrase “Thank you for your attention to this matter” works differently.

Robertson says the line feels unusually formal and controlled compared to Trump’s usual tone. That contrast makes people notice it more. When someone known for loud language suddenly becomes calm and formal, it grabs attention.

Another expert believes the phrase may also send a message about authority.

Holistic psychotherapist Shenikka Moore-Clarke says the wording carries a sense of control. It does not invite debate or discussion.

The phrase includes “thank you,” but the tone does not necessarily feel warm. Instead, it suggests that attention is already expected. In other words, it assumes the audience is listening.

Robertson says that subtle assumption matters. The wording suggests that the issue being discussed deserves attention and that the audience should treat it seriously. It becomes less of a conversation and more of a directive.

Interestingly, the phrase does not appear in every Trump post. It usually shows up when he is announcing something official or making a demand, such as calling for a policy change or announcing an appointment.

Psychologists believe this pattern could act as a signal to supporters. When the phrase appears, it may tell followers that the post is important and should be taken seriously.
