Donald Trump, heading into his second term, promised numerous times to end the Russia-Ukraine war on day one. He did not succeed in doing so, and a year and a half into his term, the war continued with little sign of an end.

And now, Trump has put his foot in his mouth in another way, regarding Ukraine.

In a revelation from Regime Change, the new book by Maggie Haberman and Jonathan Swan that came out this week, Trump made an eyebrow-raising comment, per a New York Times review.

In an Oval Office meeting, the book said, Trump declared, “I’m not a big fan of Ukraine, except their women. They keep winning Miss Universe.”

Aside from the sexism of the comment, it’s also inaccurate: No woman representing Ukraine has ever won Miss Universe, the pageant that Trump owned for many years. The United States has won the pageant nine times, while Venezuela has won it seven times, Puerto Rico five times, and Mexico and the Philippines four times each. Russia has only won it once, in 2002, but that titleholder, Oksana Fyodorova, stepped down after she objected to being asked sexual questions during an appearance on The Howard Stern Show. Trump’s infamous trip to Moscow for Miss Universe took place in 2013.

Also on the Ukraine front, the book has Trump stating that his 2025 Oval Office confrontation with Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was “great television” and “better than ‘The Apprentice.’” .

“The plot twist that Trump will not relish is that by the end of this saga of unrestrained hubris, there are intimations of the nemesis that must follow: the war on Iran throwing the Strait of Hormuz into chaos, the rising cost of living making a mockery of his promise to control inflation, his popularity slumping to new lows,” the book review states.

“Trump will not want to read this book because it shows him, not winning and winning, but gradually losing it as reality has the temerity not to bend itself to his whims. Will anyone whisper in his ear that Haberman and Swan have done what he demanded and told the truth?”

Social media users had some thoughts on Trump’s comments.
