So, have you ever had a phone conversation with someone in a restaurant that you put on speakerphone, but the person you were talking to was so loud that everyone could hear what was happening? No? OK, well that happened to Sen. Jim Inhofe when he a call from Donald Trump at Alberto Trattoria, a DC restaurant on Wednesday night, and he put it on speakerphone. It was so loud that someone else not only heard it but recorded the bizarre conversation, the New York Times reports.
While the nation is facing several crises, Trump is fixated on Confederate-named military bases.
The conversation, overheard and recorded by someone in the room, ranged from a discussion about Anthony Tata, the retired Army brigadier general whose nomination for a top Pentagon policy position has become complicated, to Mr. Trump’s desire to preserve the name of Robert E. Lee, a Confederate general, on a military base.”
“We’re gonna keep the name of Robert E. Lee?” Trump asked Inhofe. Inhofe, 85, put the phone to his ear but put the president on speakerphone, and Trump’s voice was heard by people sitting at other tables in the Italian restaurant.
Inhofe — Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee — told Trump, “Just trust me; I’ll make it happen.”

Trump then spoke of how many retweets he got on this very subject.
“I had about 95,000 positive retweets on that. That’s a lot,” the Twitter-addicted president told the Republican Senator.
Trump could also be heard criticizing “cancel culture” and then told Inhofe that people “want to be able to go back to life,” and then appeared to dismiss the focus on the cultural shift taking place across the country and used an expletive, the news outlet reports.
Actually, though, it’s not “cancel culture.” It’s about accountability — and that’s something Trump has never experienced. Well, he did when he was impeached, but then Republicans failed to hold him responsible for his own actions.
Also in the conversation, Trump and Inhofe were overheard discussing the possibility of someone “resigning” and giving that individual another appointment. According to the paper, the person they were referencing appeared to be about retired Brig. Gen. Anthony Tata, whose nomination for the Pentagon job has become mired in controversy over his inflammatory Twitter posts about Muslims, and the time he called former President Barack Obama a “terrorist leader.” Tata is also a conspiracy theorist, and why not? After all, so is Donald Trump.
Tata’s confirmation hearing was just canceled.
Trump’s focus, though, seems to be on Confederate monuments and military bases instead of the national crises Americans are suffering from.
