The whole situation screams desperation. Instead of focusing on policies or actual campaign issues, the GOP is clinging to a photo of distant relatives—people Walz probably hasn’t had dinner with in years, if ever. Twitter user Tina Webb echoed this sentiment perfectly: “This is distant family. Let’s talk about Trump’s close family.” And that’s where the real irony sets in.

While the GOP is busy hyping up the opinions of Walz’s distant relatives, Trump’s immediate family has been far from shy about their feelings toward his leadership. For instance, Trump’s niece, Mary Trump, wrote a whole book detailing why she believes he is unfit for office. Then there’s his wife, Melania, who has been notably absent from his recent rallies and public appearances. This is a sharp contrast to earlier in his presidency when she was at least occasionally seen by his side.
Ritta Hanson, another Twitter user, pointed this out in her reply: “The adult members of Trump’s family have always said he should never be president. His wife will no longer appear with him.” It’s hard to ignore the fact that Trump’s own close family seems to have distanced themselves from his political ambitions. Yet, somehow, the GOP would have you believe that Walz’s third cousins wearing Trump gear is significant.

Even Trump joined the conversation, posting on Truth Social to stir up the story. In his post, Trump shared a picture of Walz’s distant relatives and declared, “Thank you very much, Jeff. It is a Great Honor to have your Endorsement. I look forward to meeting you soon!” But when you look at the facts, it’s clear this is just a distraction with no real significance.
What’s even more revealing is how quiet the GOP is about their own candidates’ family issues. For instance, many members of Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s family have openly said they won’t vote for him and are instead supporting Kamala Harris and Tim Walz. But this doesn’t make the news in conservative media. It’s a perfect example of selective outrage.
The GOP’s focus on Walz’s distant family shows they don’t have much else to use. They’re trying to draw attention away from the fact that even Trump’s close family has questioned his leadership. When your own relatives don’t support you, it says a lot. Instead of dealing with this, they’re fixating on far-off cousins and made-up drama.
