The awkwardness says it all

For once, Melania Trump had something worth showing up for. A women’s health initiative she had personally driven, a new NIH division, a federal task force, and a room full of people who came specifically because of her.

The White House event on Monday marked the signing of an executive order establishing a new women’s health division at the National Institutes of Health, a project Melania had pushed for and appeared genuinely invested in. Before President Donald Trump signed the order, she explained why the effort mattered, saying, “It was abundantly clear that women’s healthcare needs to be modernized, the research gap closed, and further, the need to accelerate the discovery of treatments and cures was glaring.”

It was a serious policy announcement, and Melania delivered her remarks with purpose, but the photo opportunity brought a different kind of focus to the event.

After handing out pens and posing for pictures, Trump leaned in to kiss his wife. Melania turned at the last second, offering her cheek instead of her lips. He took her hand, held it briefly, then patted the back of it twice before letting go.

The clip quickly found an audience on X, where viewers had plenty to say about the exchange.

Trump has shared plenty of stories about Melania during his rallies, including her complaints about his behavior.

Last week in Alaska, he told supporters, “My wife hates when I talk about this. She says, ‘Oh it’s so inelegant, darling.'” Two days later in Arizona, he said Melania disapproved of his dancing and impersonations, but he danced offstage anyway. Trump has also told crowds that Melania calls him “Sir” at home.

At the Navy’s 250th anniversary event earlier this month, Trump tapped Melania’s cheek twice before leaning in for a kiss. Some observers described the exchange as stiff and rehearsed. In January, body language analyst Darren Stanton reviewed footage of the couple at the Kennedy Center premiere of Melania’s documentary and said Trump made “no obvious effort through his body language to display that he is proud” while standing beside her.
