Donald Trump is all over the map today, going from a mostly incoherent press conference to his Twitter account where he lashes out at the world when he feels cornered due to his failings as president. In the wake of George Floyd’s murder by Minneapolis police officers and the long list of killings of so many unarmed black individuals before him, the president has failed to stand behind three beautiful words: Black Lives Matter.
So, that message was brought to Trump’s doorstep at the White House in the form of painted letters that span two blocks. “Black Lives Matter” was painted on the street leading to the People’s House in bright yellow letters. Donald Trump is lashing out at Mayor Muriel Bowser, who commissioned the work.
Mayor Bowser tweeted out the image, to announce that it is now Black Lives Matter Plaza:

And right on cue, Trump took to his Twitter account fresh after his bizarre presser to deliver a two-part message.
The incompetent Mayor of Washington, D.C., @MayorBowser, who’s budget is totally out of control and is constantly coming back to us for “handouts”, is now fighting with the National Guard, who saved her from great embarrassment…

…over the last number of nights. If she doesn’t treat these men and women well, then we’ll bring in a different group of men and women!

Bowser tweeted on Thursday that the city is continuing to examine the legality of Trump’s authority to send National Guardsmen from other states into the District. Donald Trump sounds like he is issuing a threat by suggesting that “we’ll bring in a different group of men and women!” Threats are all Donald has left. And in the face of this country struggling to address systematic racism, instead of lashing out at another person of color, it would have been wise if the president had supported the Black Lives Matter painting by simply sharing her tweet.
He could at least pretend to care. But, on the other hand, he’s been incapable of pretending to be a president, too, so the bar is kind of low for expectations.
