Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and President Donald Trump have often been at odds ever since both came into office in early 2025, with Trump threatening to make Canada the 51st state, imposing new tariffs, and even trying to change the name of Lake Ontario.

Carney has at times responded by mocking his American counterpart, including this week.

According to The Daily Beast, the prime minister mocked the president as “touchy.”

Carney gave a speech about the proposed Pacific Link Pipeline from Alberta to British Columbia and took a shot at Trump. The pipeline, the prime minister said, “will reduce our dependence on the United States.”

“Careful. They might think that’s election interference,” Carney said, to applause. “They’re a little touchy down there. We’re not. We’re getting on with it.”

U.S. Ambassador Pete Hoekstra, earlier in the week, had warned Canadian politicians not to interfere with the November midterm elections.

“The U.S. and Canada have been locked in a trade war since they failed to reach an agreement after Trump’s far-reaching tariffs,” The Daily Beast said. “Trump has also repeatedly spoken about making Canada the 51st state.”

Social media users enjoyed Carney’s remarks.
