Strange timing.

New York Attorney General’s investigation into the Trump Organization has elevated from “purely civil in nature” to “criminal.” A civil investigation into the Trump Organization was launched in 2019 for civil tax offenses. Still, it took a more serious turn for the twice-impeached one-term president earlier this month. And now, Trump was spotted in Manhattan on Monday morning arriving at Trump Tower, according to the Daily Mail.

“He’s back in New York on the heels of an announcement from the New York attorney general’s office that it is conducting a criminal probe into the ex-president’s business dealings,” the outlet reports.

It’s unclear why Trump is visiting his old stomping grounds in a city filled with residents who loathe him and his godawful family.

The outlet reports that a slew of “potential Republican presidential hopefuls are planning to discuss the future of the party at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library, located in California’s Simi Valley.” At the same time, Trump doesn’t seem to be included in that group. Former House Speaker Paul Ryan, former Vice President Mike Pence, former U.N. Amb. Nikki Haley, former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, and Sen. Tim Scott are slated to speak at the event.

Trump has a lot to worry about with investigators nipping at his heels. Fabien Levy, a spokesman for the Attorney General’s office, said when the news broke, “We have informed the Trump Organization that our investigation into the Organization is no longer purely civil in nature. We are now actively investigating the Trump Organization in a criminal capacity, along with the Manhattan DA.”

Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance and AG Letitia James appear to be ramping up their efforts to expose Trump for potential tax crimes. Trump should be concerned since they moved on from negligence to criminal intent. The AG’s Office questioned Eric Trump, a vice president of the Trump Organization, in a deposition in October.

The former president’s longtime chief financial officer Allen Weisselberg is the subject of a criminal tax probe over questionable financial activity linked to Trump and the Trump Organization. Weisselberg has described himself as the “eyes and ears” of the Trump Organization, and prosecutors are reportedly trying to get him to flip on the ex-president. But, enjoy your visit to NYC, Mr. Trump.
