Trump Melts Down, Tries To Deflect Xi Jinping’s ‘Declining America’ Jab By Blaming Biden Instead

The logic got very tangled

While meeting Xi Jinping in Beijing, Donald Trump posted on Truth Social to confirm that America is indeed a declining nation. The blame, in his telling, belongs entirely to Biden.

“When President Xi very elegantly referred to the United States as perhaps being a declining nation, he was referring to the tremendous damage we suffered during the four years of Sleepy Joe Biden and the Biden Administration, and on that score, he was 100% correct,” Trump wrote.

“President Xi was not referring to the incredible rise that the United States has displayed to the world during the 16 spectacular months of the Trump Administration.”

He then added: “Two years ago, we were, in fact, a Nation in decline. On that, I fully agree with President Xi! But now, the United States is the hottest Nation anywhere in the world.”

There is a problem with the framing. Xi did not actually call the United States a declining nation. He invoked the so-called “Thucydides Trap” during opening remarks, referencing a geopolitical theory about conflict between a rising power and an established one. The phrase came as Xi raised the prospect of a future US-China clash over Taiwan. Trump interpreted this as Xi agreeing that Biden ran a declining nation.

Xi has in recent years said “the East is rising and the West is declining,” a phrase Beijing’s state-controlled media applies specifically to the United States, citing American political polarization and economic shifts as markers of long-term decline. Whether that is what he meant Thursday, nobody in the Chinese delegation clarified.

The Chinese Embassy instead issued a statement saying “the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation and making America great again can go hand in hand.” That answered a different question entirely.

The post found its audience quickly. Ron Filipkowski posted the screenshot on X with the caption: “Sure he was, dude. What a pathetic loser.”

The rest of the internet was not far behind.
