Trump Mocks CNN Reporter’s Outfit During Heated Exchange, Prompting Questions

Seven weeks after calling CNN’s Kristen Holmes “a fake reporter” in the Oval Office, Trump went after her again on Monday, telling her, “And your whole outfit is fake and so are you.”

The August exchange set things off.

On August 17, Holmes pressed Trump about his plan to scale back military exercises with South Korea, and he cut her off with “Quiet.” When she told him she worked for CNN, he answered, “Fake news. You’re fake news. You’re a fake reporter. And you report fake news.”

CNN defended her in a statement that day. “Kristen Holmes is one of the most respected and accomplished journalists covering the White House,” the network said. “We stand firmly behind Kristen and reject these attacks in the strongest possible terms.” White House Rapid Response also weighed in with a post of its own, writing, “Someday, your children will come across your disgusting and inhumane question.”

Monday’s round took place outside Trump’s latest midterm rally, at the Pinnacle Bank Expo Center in Grand Island, Nebraska. Holmes asked about a poll showing approval among Latino registered voters had fallen to 27%, and Trump had little interest in the number.

“Oh, I’m doing great. You got my poll. You’re fake news. You’re CNN, you’re fake news,” he said. He pointed to his crowds as the better measure. “My poll numbers are great. All you have to do is look at the crowds I’m drawing in – every time that [Republican] candidate will be losing, but by the time I leave, they’ll be winning.”

Next, he turned to Holmes’ wardrobe. “You know, CNN poll numbers are fake,” Trump said. “And your whole outfit is fake and so are you.”

Footage of the exchange got a fast response on X.

Over at CNN, a different piece of wardrobe-adjacent detail has viewers talking. Watchers of “The Source with Kaitlan Collins” noticed a blue coffee mug on her desk reading “America Needs Nasty Women,” a phrase some read as a quiet reply to Trump, who has called Collins “stupid and nasty” in the past.
