Legendary Watergate reporter Carl Bernstein warned that Donald Trump is just fine with burning the country to the ground if he thinks it will help him win a second term.
Along with Bob Woodward, Bernstein helped bring down former President Richard Nixon through investigative reporting that held him accountable for his actions.
When asked during an interview on Good Morning Britain how Trump is similar to Nixon, Bernstein pointed out that while American institutions worked to hold Nixon accountable, they have failed spectacularly to hold Trump accountable for even worse behavior and scandals.
Indeed, Senate Republicans rigged an impeachment trial in Trump’s favor despite hard evidence and clear witness testimony demonstrating that Trump tried to extort Ukraine into interfering with the 2020 Election on his behalf.

His crony Attorney General Bill Barr is dismantling the Justice Department and sweeping cases against Trump and his loyalists under the rug. And Trump has fired Inspectors General and anyone else who poses a threat to his effort to attain absolute power.
And through it all, Trump’s supporters refuse to turn on him.
“Donald Trump has commanded the allegiance of perhaps 40 percent of our electorate through his presidency, despite all the outrages, despite the acts of demonstrable incompetence, despite the fact that he is a racist in terms of both his words and his acts,” Bernstein said. “This is an extraordinary situation.”
Bernstein went on to say that Trump is a national security threat and is ignorant of history.
But he’s particularly dangerous as the 2020 Election in November approaches. Because Trump is down significantly in the polls and is losing to Joe Biden, Bernstein warned that Trump is so desperate that he “is willing to see this country, to some extent, go up in flames on the streets if he thinks that it would help his re-election.”
And that’s evident considering Trump has been stoking racism and division in recent weeks while accusing Democrats of being enemies of the nation.

Bernstein’s warning should be taken seriously. At this point, Trump is likely to do anything to stay in power even if it means refusing to leave office upon losing the election or trying to cancel it entirely. Americans need to remain vigilant and prepared to do something about it.
