Recently released images of Natalie show her looking like any other teenager. In some photos shared by her father, Jeff Rupnow, she seems happy and normal. She smiles and looks carefree and innocent.
These images are a painful contrast to the shocking act she committed just days ago. They show Natalie as a typical young girl, someone you would never expect to carry out something so tragic.
However, another image shared by her father in August shows a very different side. In that photo, Natalie is at a shooting range, holding a gun and wearing a T-shirt of the German band KMFDM. This band’s clothing is famously connected to the Columbine shooting in 1999 because Eric Harris, one of the Columbine shooters, wore similar apparel.

While this may have seemed harmless then, it now raises many questions. Could this photo have been a warning sign? Was Natalie quietly struggling with something more profound that no one noticed?
The comparison between these two sets of images—one of a happy child and the other of her at a shooting range—shows just how complex her life may have been. On the surface, she appeared like any other teenager. But something was clearly going wrong behind the scenes.
Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes said investigators are looking into a “manifesto” or a letter that might be connected to Natalie. This document could explain what she thought and felt before the shooting. Police are also looking through her phone, computer, and social media accounts to understand her mindset and the events leading up to the attack.
One of the biggest questions is how Natalie got access to a gun. Police have asked the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) to track the gun’s origin. Was it a family-owned weapon? Did it come from somewhere else? Natalie’s parents are cooperating with investigators, but police are also looking into whether any mistakes were made, such as failing to secure the weapon properly.
At this point, no charges have been filed against her parents, but the investigation is ongoing. Similar cases in Michigan and Georgia have seen parents face criminal charges after school shootings so that investigators will take a close look at this situation.
This tragedy has once again put the spotlight on school shootings in the United States. Representative Mark Pocan (D-WI) has called for urgent changes to gun laws, saying, “This is the over 80th school shooting this year. Too many lives have been lost.” The conversation around gun control, mental health support, and school safety is louder than ever.
The Madison community is heartbroken. Families gathered at reunification centers after the shooting, holding onto their children and crying for the lives lost. The loss of a teacher and a student has shaken the entire town, leaving people scared, sad, and confused.
As the investigation continues, the focus is on helping the victims’ families heal and finding ways to prevent tragedies like this from happening again. Whether through stronger gun laws, better mental health support, or improved school safety measures, something needs to change.
