There are certainly phrases that supporters of Donald Trump are not supposed to use, and one of them is referring to Trump’s White House or administration as a “regime.” One GOP senator learned that lesson the hard way this week.

Per The Independent, Sen. Dave McCormick (R-PA) appeared on Fox News and, when defending the high gas prices brought upon by the Iran war, declared that “the alternative of Iran with a nuclear weapon…they could threaten America or its kids, which was very likely to happen under President Trump’s regime…”

The senator quickly corrected himself and said “his administration” instead.

“Regime” is more likely to be a term used in reference to Iran than to the Trump presidency, especially by a senator of Trump’s own party. McCormick, the former CEO of the controversial hedge fund Bridgewater Associates, was elected to the Senate in 2024, defeating incumbent Bob Casey, the same night Trump was elected to his second term.

The Pennsylvania senator was the subject of some social media scorn, most of whom noted that he had “said the quiet part out loud” or made a “Freudian slip.”
