A Thousand Plus Steel Workers Laid Off After Trump Claimed “US Steel Mills Are Doing Great”

It's almost as if Trump doesn't know what he's doing.

Donald Trump has vowed for years now to assist the steel industry after it has been declining. During his rally in Michigan, the “president” bragged about what he has done for the industry, although there is no proof of that claim. “Look at what I’ve done for steel,” Trump said on Wednesday. “Look at what I’ve done for steel. I mean, the steel is back. We taxed all of the dump steel coming in from China and other places, and your steel mills that are doing great, they’re expanding all over the country. And they were going to be out of business within two years.”

Proving once again that everything Trump touches turns into shit, 1,500 employees at a US steel mill in Detroit are now out of work. CNN reports that the mill, called the Great Lakes Works, is expected to close its operations by April 1st after a temporary layoff of about 200 workers at the plant earlier this year.

“We are conscious of the impact this decision will have on our employees, their families, and the local community, and we are announcing it now to provide them with as much time as possible to prepare for this transition,” CEO David Burritt said, according to CNN. “These decisions are never easy, nor are they taken lightly.”

And in 2018, Trump spoke with Burritt about his plans to revive the steel industry and the CEO heaped praise on the “president” for his tariffs. In October this year, US Steel reported its first loss since tariffs were imposed.

Peter Navarro, the White House’s director of the office of trade and manufacturing policy, blamed the layoffs on the company, telling CNN that the closing of the US Steel mill was not due to the tariffs or US trade policy.

“I think the bet [on tariffs] is paying off beautifully,” he insisted “We are very bullish on the steel and aluminum industries because of the tariffs. If they weren’t in place, those industries would be in very bad shape right now.”

Donald Trump is as good for the steel industry as he is for the dying coal industry. During Trump’s first two years in office, fifty coal-fired power plants had shut down in the U.S.

It’s almost as if Trump is full of shit or something.
