According to a new report from the New York Times, Donald Trump’s “off-again, on-again” speech at the West Point Military Academy graduation is now on again, and apparently it was news to everyone, including those who attend the academy.

The Times notes that the West Point commencement ceremony is the only service academy graduation that Trump has not yet been able to speak at. However, due to the massive outbreak of coronavirus we’re facing in this nation, the ceremony was postponed and Academy officials were unsure of when or if it would be rescheduled.

“The Naval Academy, for its part, decided it was too risky to recall its nearly 1,000 graduating midshipmen to Annapolis, Md., for a commencement. Those graduates will have a virtual event. But the Air Force Academy, in contrast to the other schools, sent home its underclassmen, locked down its seniors on campus, moved up graduation, mandated social distancing — and went ahead with plans for Vice President Mike Pence to be its speaker,” the Times report reads.

“And so last Friday, the day before Mr. Pence was to speak at the Air Force ceremony in Colorado, Mr. Trump, never one to be upstaged, abruptly announced that he would, in fact, be speaking at West Point,” the report added, sure to point out Trump’s flaming ego and fragile feelings.

But the biggest news on the report followed just after the highlight on Trump’s bad attitude. Evidently, West Point had no idea about Trump’s plan until Trump announced it out of the blue, leaving the school to gather up the 1,000 cadets that are currently spread across the country and herd them back to the campus that’s located in New York, the biggest hot spot of the virus in the nation.

West Point graduate and former chairwoman of the academy’s Board of Visitors Sue Fulton said of the announcement, “He’s the commander in chief, that’s his call. Cadets are certainly excited about the opportunity to have something like the classic graduation, standing together, flinging their hats in the air… But everyone is leery about bringing 1,000 cadets into the New York metropolitan area for a ceremony. It’s definitely a risk.”

But when has Trump ever really cared about the risk of the American people? So long as he’s getting what he wants.
