Donald Trump is seriously considering using the White House to host a memorial service for his late-brother Robert even though Robert never held a government post or lived at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.
Robert Trump died of an undisclosed cause on Saturday in New York as Donald teed off on the golf course not too far away from the hospital.
While speaking to reporters about his brother, Trump made the loss all about himself. But then he made things worse by suggesting a memorial service might be held at the White House.
“We may do just a small service right here in the White House for my brother,” Trump said. “That would be, I think, a great honor to him … he was so proud of what we were doing and what we are doing.”

Again, Robert Trump never served this country in any capacity, not as a soldier and not as a public servant. He was a businessman. Holding a service for him at the White House is inappropriate as would be almost akin to holding a state funeral. This is not an honor Robert Trump deserves, and would likely be used by Donald as a platform to attack his political rivals and spew his propaganda. Furthermore, taxpayers may end up being on the hook for the bill.
Americans were not amused by Trump’s suggestion.
I guess @realDonaldTrump doesn’t want to take time off from trolling Joe and golfing to attend one in NYC

Of course, charge it to the tax payers.

Is Trump going to make US taxpayers pay for the service too?

Clearly he doesn’t want to have to cancel a campaign event to go to a funeral. That’s all what this is about. Full stop.

He’s know’s it is literally not HIS house right? No, never mind, I know that sad answer to that.
— Cavey (@BrokenCaveman) August 17, 2020
Does he realize this is unethical? The White House is NOT his house. It’s ours.

Seems like an odd and inappropriate thing to do.

“After all, the most appropriate way to honor my brother’s life is to remind people that I am the president.”

Why would he get a service in the White House? Another step in the direction of a monarch. Washington, Franklin, Jefferson, Lincoln, etc. all turning in their graves.

This is an abuse of power, pure and simple. No one in Trump’s family deserves such an honor, including Trump himself, yet it appears Trump is preparing to violate yet another sacred norm for the benefit of his own ego and his obsession with authoritarianism.
