Another breach on watch

Recently, the list of things happening at the White House on any given day has grown considerably. Thursday afternoon added a fence-jumping attempt to it.

The man, whose name has not been made public, targeted one of the perimeter entrance gates while Trump was in the building. Secret Service agents swarmed the area and tackled him within seconds, cutting the attempt short before it became anything more serious.

A witness reported a sudden burst of activity as agents converged on the area. Whatever the man’s plan was, it did not survive the first few seconds.

The incident adds another entry to one of Washington’s most consistently populated lists.

White House security breaches have occurred with remarkable regularity across multiple presidencies, ranging from a man who scaled the fence in 2014 and made it through the North Portico doors before being tackled inside, to a toddler who squeezed through the fence in 2023 and was carried back to his parents by a Secret Service officer.

The most infamous breach in recent history came in September 2014, when Omar Gonzalez jumped the fence, sprinted across the North Lawn, overpowered a Secret Service officer inside and ran through most of the main floor of the White House before being tackled by a counter-assault agent. The incident prompted a congressional review, the resignation of the Secret Service director and a significant overhaul of security protocols. Thursday’s attempt did not get nearly that far.

The fence itself has been upgraded substantially since then. The current structure stands 13 feet tall, roughly twice the height of earlier versions, and was reinforced during the George Floyd protests and 2020 elections with concrete barriers designed to prevent vehicles from ramming through. Scaling it is not a casual undertaking, which makes each attempt a fairly committed decision on the part of whoever is making it.
