Former First Lady Melania Trump has taken to her official X (formerly known as Twitter) account this evening to announce the passing of her “beloved mother,” Amalija Knavs, at the age of 78.
“It is with deep sadness that I announce the passing of my beloved mother, Amalija,” ex-President Donald Trump’s third and current wife wrote in this evening’s social media post. “Amalija Knavs was a strong woman who always carried herself with grace, warmth, and dignity.”
“She was entirely devoted to her husband, daughters, grandson, and son-in-law. We will miss her beyond measure and continue to honor and love her legacy,” the former first lady went on to add.

Melania did not include her mother’s cause of death in the social media post announcing her passing. However, her husband, former President Trump, confirmed over the holidays that Melania’s mother was “very ill” with an undisclosed ailment — a matter that Trump announced to the public with little detail following questions regarding his wife’s whereabouts during the holidays. Donald’s wife was notably absent from the family’s gatherings over the holiday season, prompting the former president to disclose that Amalija was suffering from a severe illness and was even hospitalized at one point.
CBS News notes, “Amalija Knavs was born in Slovenia in 1945. Melanija Knavs was born to Amalijia and her husband, Viktor, in 1970. At the time, Slovenia was still under Communist rule.”
Amalija and her husband, Melania’s father, Viktor became US citizens in 2018, during their son-in-law’s presidential term. According to reporting, both of Melania’s parents had been living at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in recent weeks.
