Has anyone seen McCarthy's spine? It appears to be missing.

GOP leadership has been stunningly silent over Rep. Lauren Boehert’s Islamophobic comparison of Rep. Ilham Omar to a suicide bomber. Omar is among one of two Muslim women in Congress, and she is a frequent target for Republicans, so Boebert thought she’d amp up the hateful rhetoric for her fire breathing, lint-licking supporters. Boebert issued an apology, but she’s done this before. The damage has been done, and you can’t unring a bell. Finally, House Republican leader Kevin McCarthy released a statement, but he failed to condemn Boebert’s dangerous rhetoric.

“I talked to Congresswoman Lauren Boebert today,” McCarthy said in his statement. “She has apologized for what she said and has reached out to Congresswoman Omar to meet next week.”

“I spoke with Leader Hoyer today to help facilitate that meeting so that Congress can get back to talking to each other and working on the challenges facing the American people,” he added.

MSNBC host Yasmin Vossoughian took McCarthy’s statement to task, saying that the GOP House leader failed to call out Boebert’s remarks as “wrong or abhorrent or racist or islamophobic.” Vossoughian then asked GOP strategist Susan Del Percio if we should “expect more” from Kevin McCarthy.

“We should expect more from leadership, but Kevin McCarthy has shown no leadership, so I don’t expect more from him because he’s incompetent and is just bound to whatever he thinks — and that’s the key, whatever he thinks — will make Donald Trump happy,” Del Percio said. “So that’s his audience, and that’s who he’s playing to. … Kevin McCarthy is trying to maybe look like something — I can’t say like a leader, because he’s just not — and he’s just become pathetic.

Watch:

McCarthy didn’t tell use anything that Boebert hasn’t said in her apology.

“I apologize to anyone in the Muslim community I offended with my comment about Rep. Oma,” she tweeted. “I have reached out to her office to speak with her directly. There are plenty of policy differences to focus on without this unnecessary distraction.”

She also called Biden a “piece of crap” at the same event where she compared Omar to a terrorist. She’s on a roll.
