Major Housing Bill In Limbo As Trump Demands SAVE Act Passage

The president made a shocking statement about housing policy.

Housing is a pretty important issue to a lot of people. There isn’t enough of it, and it’s too expensive. Ezra Klein and Derek Thompson’s book “Abundance,” published shortly after Donald Trump’s return to office, argued that Democrats should, among other things, make it easier to build housing in more places. You’d think that Trump, who spent much of his life in the real estate business, would be aware of the importance of housing, both as a good and an issue.

Trump seems to see things differently.

On Wednesday, Trump abruptly canceled a planned signing ceremony for a new housing bill that had passed both houses of Congress by veto-proof majorities, stating that he would not allow the bill to go forward unless his SAVE Act election legislation passed first.

It is perhaps not surprising, as back in March, Punchbowl News reported at the time, Trump had told House Speaker Mike Johnson, in reference to that bill, that “no one gives a shit about housing.” Four sources had heard Speaker Johnson recount the conversation at the time.

That quote resurfaced again this week, after Trump canceled the housing bill ceremony, even as Congressional leaders continued to tout it.

“No one gives a shit about housing.”

Only ballrooms.

What happens now? Because of the overwhelming majority, the housing bill could override a Trump veto, which has never happened in his presidency. Or he could change his mind and sign it.
