Many Americans, mostly on the Democratic side, objected to the president’s plans to host a UFC event outside the White House on Donald Trump’s 80th birthday. Adding to the objections was former Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, Trump’s ally-turned-enemy, and not someone one might expect to object to such an event.
Per The Hill, Greene, in an interview with News Nation prior to the event on Friday, called it inappropriate for a president to hold such an event.
“I think UFC fights are great. I enjoy watching them, but to be honest with you, I don’t really think they belong on the White House lawn,” Greene said in the interview.
“And I don’t think Americans’ taxpayer dollars should have to be paying for that. We have a lot of other important things that we should pay for,” she said. “However, I do hope it’s a great event, and of course I always wish the President well, I wish everyone well, so we’ll see how the event unrolls.”

According to the report by The Hill, hosting the UFC event required about $60 million in public expenditures.
Polling backs the idea that the public didn’t love the idea of such an event taking place.
“A Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted this month found that just 16 percent of Americans said it was appropriate for Trump to hold the event at the White House, compared to 46 percent who said the opposite. A little more than one-third of respondents answered ‘neither’ or said they were unsure,” The Hill reported.
Meanwhile, UFC head Dana White said at the event that the organization will not be returning to the White House in the future.
“I can’t afford it,” White said, per ESPN. “I’ll never do the Sphere again, and we’ll never do this again.” White, a longtime Trump partisan, did condemn the remarks by one fighter on the card that “Michelle Obama is a man.”
“I understand that the Obamas are public figures, but I’m completely against saying nasty and false things about people’s families,” White said. “Everyone knows my position on free speech, but I hate that kind of nonsense.”
