During the 2024 campaign, CNN polling analyst Harry Enten sometimes upset opponents of Donald Trump by sharing polling numbers that looked good for the now-president. However, in the opening weeks of Trump’s presidency, Enten often appeared on CNN with news that was much worse for Trump, including some negative economic numbers last week. And that included a segment on Wednesday morning.

Amid the news that Elon Musk, despite not being a member of the cabinet, had appeared at a cabinet meeting this morning, CNN reported that members of the administration and Republicans in Congress have been expressing increased “frustration” with Musk’s role in the government. Then Enten appeared to share some polling numbers about the general public’s fatigue with Musk.

Enten shared the results of a Quinnipiac poll in which respondents were asked whether Musk has too much, too little, or enough power in government decision-making. The answers were, that 55 percent said “too much,” 36 percent answered “too little,” and just 3 percent said “not enough.” More people, Enten said, “believe we faked the moon landing.”

“The bottom line is that Americans do not like how much power Elon Musk has in government decision-making, and very few Americans think he should somehow have more power.”

Another question, this time from a Washington Post/IPSOS poll, found that 63 percent of respondents were “concerned” about DOGE”s access to their data. Even 37 percent of Republicans answered “yes” to that question. Enten added that “there’s a good portion of the Republican base that’s saying ‘you know what, Elon Musk, maybe you should take a little bit of a step back.”

Enten also shared some data that while Google searches are way down for both Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance, they are way up for Musk and DOGE, indicating that Americans are paying attention to what the billionaire with no set role in the administration is doing. And they’re not liking what they’re seeing.

“The bottom line is that he’s not a popular guy, and he’s becoming the face of the administration,” Enten said. It was Enten’s first appearance on CNN since his promotion to Chief Data Analyst at the network.
