It looks like the quarterback for the New Orleans Saints, Drew Brees, is finally trying to make things right after releasing some unsavory statements about NFL players using their platform to peacefully protest police brutality in the United States by taking a knee — and he’s doing it by directly calling out Donald Trump and systemic racism in this country.
Brees and the NFL as a whole came under quite a bit of fire recently when the quarterback made a comment about Colin Kaepernick’s movement of kneeling in peaceful protest as being “disrespectful” of the American flag.
As expected, Donald Trump, no doubt from the safety of his bunker, just couldn’t resist the urge to tweet out his support of Brees’ comments, but quickly found himself upset with the NFL star when Brees issued an apology for his statement, ultimately rage tweeting, “NO KNEELING!”
I am a big fan of Drew Brees. I think he’s truly one of the greatest quarterbacks, but he should not have taken back his original stance on honoring our magnificent American Flag. OLD GLORY is to be revered, cherished, and flown high…

…We should be standing up straight and tall, ideally with a salute, or a hand on heart. There are other things you can protest, but not our Great American Flag – NO KNEELING!

However, it seems that the NFL star has now checked his privilege and has issued a public response directly to Donald Trump, and it’s not one that the Tweeter-in-chief is going to be very happy with.
Taking to his Instagram, Brees opened his statement with a white image, featuring “To President Trump” in text.
The quarterback went on to explain that this is “not an issue about the American flag.”
“We can no longer use the flag to turn people away or distract them from the real issues that face our black communities,” Brees wrote. “We must stop talking about the flag and shift our attention to the real issues of systemic racial injustice, economic oppression, police brutality, and judicial & prison reform. We are at a critical juncture in our nation’s history! If not now, then when?”
Brees’ statement, directed at the president, comes on the heels of a historic apology from NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell on behalf of the entire league.
The NFL star concluded his public post with a direct plea to Donald Trump to take action against the blatant, systemic racism and police brutality that’s infected this nation for so many years.
“We as a white community need to listen and learn from the pain and suffering of our black communities,” Brees writes. “We must acknowledge the problems, identify the solutions, and then put this into action. The black community cannot do it alone. This will require all of us.”
Now it’s time to check yourself, Donald.
