As vice president, you’d think JD Vance would know a thing or two about how the nation’s justice system works. But he just posted an embarrassing gaffe on X, so apparently, he doesn’t. Now, social media users are claiming ownership, and for good reason.
I don’t know the job description for vice president, but I think part of that description includes a working knowledge of how legal issues work in the U.S.
Instead, political commentator Brian Krassenstein notes how ignorant Vance is by highlighting Pete Buttigieg’s pointed response to the vice president.
“Pete Buttigieg understands America much better than JD Vance does…” he writes.

Vance’s thinking is emblematic of how everyone in the Trump administration thinks. Judges are supposed to keep the executive’s “legitimate power” in check. Especially in a time of would-be dictators — which is what Trump is seemingly trying to become.
Social media users were quick to rib Vance for his embarrassing gaffe.

One commenter noted that Trump & Co. are running roughshod over the Constitution. Or at least trying to.

Vance doesn’t seem to understand that the U.S. operates under a system of checks and balances. According to United States Courts, there are three branches — the legislative, executive, and judicial branches, all of which operate under a system of checks and balances. As USCourts notes:
“This means that although each branch is formally separate from the other two, the Constitution often requires cooperation among the branches. Federal laws, for example, are passed by Congress and signed by the President. The judicial branch, in turn, has the authority to decide the constitutionality of federal laws and resolve other cases involving federal laws. But judges depend upon the executive branch to enforce court decisions.”
I went straight to the horse’s mouth here. I think this makes things pretty clear. All I’m saying is it would be nice if Vance would get his facts straight. The same goes for his boss.
