Republicans, including Donald Trump, are well aware that more people voting increases the chances that their party will be defeated. With Americans sheltering at home to flatten the coronavirus curve, most elections officials across the country are calling for voting to be carried out by mail. It’s not a plot, of course, but it is a matter of survival. Trump has spent the last couple of months raging against mail-in voting, even though the president votes by mail. And of course, there is no evidence of widespread voter fraud by mail.
On Tuesday, Trump once again unleashed tweets to attack the very system by which he himself votes, and according to political scientist Seth Masket, there’s a reason the president is doing that.
Masket took to Twitter to say that the president will claim November’s election is fraudulent if he doesn’t win the election.
“If Trump loses he will still be president for 2.5 months and will be claiming it was a fraudulent election every day of that,” Masket tweeted. “And his party and Fox News personalities will amplify those claims. Reporters should be preparing for this now.”

Trump tried to pull this shit just ahead of the 2016 presidential election, so it wouldn’t be surprising if he does it again. Trump repeats his lies multiple times, even after they are fact-checked and debunked. Trump is likely even more terrified of losing this election than he was when he ran against Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.
The difference this year is that presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden is his likely challenger, but Biden was also former President Barack Obama’s Vice President and they are friends. Obama has promised to campaign hard for Biden. If Trump loses amid the pandemic and apocalyptic economy, he’ll also know that the man who he is obsessively jealous of, Barack Obama, defeated him, too.
Trump could potentially face charges when he vacates the White House, so he’s not going to go quietly.
