Over the course of the past few days, Donald Trump has taken a new (or at least renewed) tactic to his 2020 presidential campaign in the form of relentless, false, and slanderous attacks on his predecessor, Barack Obama.
At first glance, this doesn’t appear as though it’s anything really all that surprising. Frankly, Trump has been attacking his forerunner since his 2016 campaigning days. However, according to a new report from the Washington Post, upon further investigation, there appears to be a far more devious reason behind this round of the most manic attacks to date.
Using his newly coined “Obamagate” slogan, Trump has taken to his social media account as well as public press conference lately to peddle the claim that former President Barack Obama was part of a massive plot to take him down before he took office in 2017.
Yesterday, Trump went a step further still during an interview with Fox News, in which he called on Senator Lindsey Graham to haul Obama into Congress and essentially force him “to testify about the biggest political crime and scandal in the history of the USA.”

While no one is exactly sure what Trump’s “Obamagate” conspiracy theory is actually about, it does seem to have something to do with the 2017 decision to publicly reveal the identity of Michael Flynn while he was under investigation.
And now the Post seems to have found the reason why Trump is suddenly harping about it at the top of his lungs.
According to WaPo, Trump’s new line of attack against Obama is an attempt to neutralize the former president as a surrogate for 2020 Democratic frontrunner and Barack’s former Vice President, Joe Biden.
Apparently, Trump hopes to use this smear campaign against his predecessor to make sure that Obama is no longer useful to his former running mate in securing his bid for president this year.
According to the Post, the Trump campaign sees Obama as a huge threat, as the former president gears up to more publicly support Biden’s campaign. And honestly, they’re right to be concerned.
Obama has held steady over the years as one of the most popular political figures in the United States, and even came in number one on a 2018 Pew survey of the best US president of respondents’ lifetimes.
Inside sources recently told the New York Times that Donald is still confident that his administration’s intelligence community appointees will be able to cook up enough nonsense material against Obama to lessen his credibility.
Andrew Bates, a spokesman for Biden’s campaign, said, “Donald Trump’s attempt at dishonest media manipulation to distract from his response to the worst public health crisis in 100 years has backfired.”
While I’m unsurprised that Trump is being shady once again, I can only imagine that this ploy of Trump’s will end much like the rest — by blowing up in his face.
