The Internet Responds In Disbelief After Rand Paul Implies He Doesn’t Need To Wear A Face Mask: “This Guy Was A Doctor”

Paging Rand Paul's neighbor.

According to U.S. Sen. Rand Paul, who is a doctor, the Kentucky Republican did not need to wear a face mask to a GOP Senate lunch Tuesday, saying he had already tested positive for the novel coronavirus and claimed he has immunity from the disease.

There is so much wrong with Paul’s claims it’s hard to know where to start. First of all, the mask is worn to protect others, and his declaration of immunity is sketchy.

Robert Redfield, director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said more testing is needed and added that the protective immunity theory is a “scientific hypothesis.”

“I think it’s important to emphasize that we haven’t yet proven that once you develop antibodies, [you develop protective immunity],” he told NBC News last month. “It’s still a scientific hypothesis that this virus will lead to protective immunity of some duration.

And there is a new strain of the virus that appears to be even more contagious.

Still, Paul claims he has immunity from the spreading coronavirus.

“I have immunity. I’ve already had the virus, so I can’t get it again and I can’t give it to anybody…of all the people you’ll meet here, I’m about the only safe person in Washington you’ll meet,” Paul said.

The Internet was not amused.

Rand Paul went swimming in the Senate pool while waiting on his COVID-19 test results, and after he tested positive, went on to oppose the relief bill and called to reopen the economy. And now he doesn’t feel as though he needs to wear a face mask. I’m starting to see a pattern here.
