Accountability could be coming to Donald J. Trump’s doorstep after the former president incited the deadly Jan. 6 insurrection to cling to power after losing handily to Joe Biden in both the electoral and popular vote. A lawsuit was launched against the former president by two Capitol police officers who directly blamed Trump for the deadly riots. As a former White House lawyer put it recently, this lawsuit could put Trump in “serious trouble.”

The Daily Beast reports that the former president is retaining attorney Jesse Binnall, marking it as the third lawsuit against Trump related to the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, in which Binnall is representing Trump. Binnall, the outlet notes, previously represented former disgraced Trump national security advisor Mike Flynn.

The outlet reports that “Binall has also represented the Trump campaign in its attempts to overturn Joe Biden’s electoral victory in the state of Nevada and has represented Defending the Republic, an organization linked to Trumpist attorney Sidney Powell which Dominion Voting Systems has sued alongside Powell for defamation.”

“Binnall will represent Trump in a suit brought by officers James Blassingame and Sidney Hemby in late March,” the report continues. “The suit alleges that then-President Trump “had inflamed, encouraged, incited, directed, and aided and abetted” and “insurrectionist mob” to attack the Capitol Police on Jan. 6, leading to injuries suffered by the two men.”

“Blassingame and Hemby’s suit accuses Trump of incitement to riot and directing, aiding, and abetting assault and battery, among other charges,” the outlet reports. “The two men say they suffered injuries to their heads, necks, and backs from assaults by the rioters and continue to struggle with the emotional toll of having been overwhelmed by the rioting mob that day.”

According to police chiefs for law enforcement agencies in Washington, D.C. that responded to the Capitol Riots on Jan. 6, more than 140 officers sustained injuries in the attack on the Capitol. The visual of the officer that was being crushed in the Capitol door and another officer being beaten with an American flag will go down in the history books. And the man that incited the chaos will have to learn a new word one day: consequences.
